La Defense

13 Jul

C had an early class so AK and I headed out to see la Defense, a collection of modern office towers on the outskirts of Paris.  We were pleasantly surprised by all the art and sculptures on the big esplanade.  At the end of the walk there is a modern interpretation of l’Arche de Triomphe called le Grand Arche.  It’s actually two office towers that are connected by their roofs.  You can go up top and get a great view of the entire city if you aren’t morbidly scared of heights…

There were also some cool water fountains which all had signs telling you not to swim in them, which seemed odd as they were about 5cm deep…  Right by le Grand Arche we were surprised to find a North American style shopping mall (it even had a toys r us!).  This entire area seems to really emphasize modern design and art, so I wasn’t entirely shocked when walking past the local McDonalds, I saw that they had Eames chairs inside….
